6R Polo Headlight Switch

Surprisingly, the new 2010 Polo (6R) has utilised quite a number of Mark IV Golf older technologies. This includes the older style of headlight switch that carries the full electrical current load of the various lights, the same as the Mark IV version does.

The 6R Polo has a rather attractive "brushed alloy" effect headlight switch with the latest style larger ergometric operating knob. It is the same shade of black as the Mark IV version as well.

Note that the "brushed alloy" effect is only plastic and not real alloy like the other dash trims on the .:R32.

Additionally, the Parking Light symbol is backlit green like the other newer VW switches.

Unfortunately, if you have a Rear Foglight fitted, the emblem in the switch still does NOT light up and relies on the Rear Foglight Warning Light in the cluster. This newer switch is greatly redesigned on the circuit board and it would be extremely difficult to add a Rear Foglight LED warning inside the switch like you can on our older switches.

This item operates in the same manner as the popular "Euro Switch" conversion and is absolutely plug & play in the Mark IV.:R32.

There is also a slightly different version of the switch available fitted to cars with Daytime Running Lights.

This version lights up the green emblem at full intensity with the ignition ON when the Headlight Switch is in the -0- position to indicate that the Daytime Running Light system is "functioning".

When the Switch is moved to any other position then all the symbols are dimmable with the rheostat as per normal.

This switch is also 100% plug & play in the .:R32 as this extra functionality is merely an additional connection in the internal circuitry.

The green LED will act this way whether or not an actual Daytime Running Light system is connected.

Installation

Firstly, I recommend disconnecting the negative terminal of battery. The headlight switch has a permanent live feed from the battery, so there is a possibility that something may accidently get shorted during removal.

Removal of old headlight switch

In the OFF ("0") position, press the headlight switch knob IN. It will recess into the switch body below the level of the surrounding ring. Keeping the knob pressed in, turn the switch knob to the vertical position.

Now, PULL the switch towards you straight out and the entire switch should disengage from the dash. It should pull out just enough for you to have room to unplug the large 17 pin electrical connector attached to the rear of the switch.

Installation of Polo switch

Prepare the Polo switch for installation by pressing the knob in at the "0" position and locking it in the vertical position as you did for the .:R32 switch when you removed it.

Plug in the electrical connector at the rear of the switch and then carefully insert the switch into the dash.

Turn the knob back to the "0" position once the switch is fully seated in it's correct position.

This will release the tabs that lock the switch in place.

Reconnect negative terminal of battery.
